Most people have to read Lord of the Flies in high school. Most people hate it, or don’t get it. I actually didn’t have to read it in high school, because it was an on-level book and I was in Pre-AP that year. But I heard my friends talking about it, so I tried to pick it up to read it. And I hated it.
Flash forward 10 years and I am now teaching it. Y’all. This book is a MASTERPIECE. Which is a word I do not use very often. I can probably count on one hand the films and books I would apply that word to. There are so many hard truths in this book.
As for this quote: In case you don’t know or remember, a bunch of boys are stranded on a beautiful and bountiful island. And then a little boy thinks he sees a “Beast” in the dark, as scared little boys without their parents will. As terrible things happen and boys keep dying, they begin to blame “The Beast”. Except there is no beast on the island. Only the boys. And their own actions.
